What is Jim’s Hearts all about?

Jim’s Hearts is a legacy story of Jim Maveety and his family. It is an invaluable patient and caregiver perspective of organ transplantation in Canada, generously shared by the Maveety family through the good and the bad for more than a decade. Jim passed away at home in January 2025 after 25 years of battling heart disease. He was only 57. He is profoundly missed by his loving wife Marah, and family.

There are well over a hundred Canadians on the waiting list for a heart transplant. Ottawa’s Jim Maveety was one of them for more than two agonizing years. Jim received the gift of life from a hero – an organ donor – in the Spring of 2015. His hope was renewed and life began again. Due to this ultimate gift, Jim proudly walked his daughter down the aisle at her wedding and shared the joy of the first grandchild. Milestones for which the whole Maveety Family is beyond grateful.

In September 2021 Jim faced the daunting waiting list for a new heart once again. Jim, under the excellent care of the Ottawa Heart Institute, was diagnosed with cardiac allograft vasculopathy (CAV). CAV is essentially an accelerated type of coronary artery disease in people who have had a heart transplant. It messes with blood flow to the heart and with the heart muscle itself leading to the need for a repeat heart transplant. By November 2023, Jim’s options had narrowed and a new heart was no longer among them.

So important to the whole Maveety family is raising awareness about the importance of registering to be an organ donor. This hope is so important to all families and patients on the waiting list for organ transplants. Sadly, only 25% of Ontarians are registered organ donors. About half of the most desperate patients never receive their transplant operation because of the shortage.

Let Jim’s story be an inspiration to you.

I am a retired R.N, living in Kanata…I am a registered organ donor, & also a blood donor! Having had pericarditis (inflammation of the outer lining of the heart) & a father who had a pacemaker implant @ 57yrs.old & died @ 67 yrs. of cardiac failure; I’m well aware how short life can be for someone with cardiac problems…I know how hard the situation can be from both ends of the spectrum; but I hope that Jim gets a heart soon!
Happy 22nd Wedding Anniversary to both Marah & Jim! (our 32ndAnniversary is May 29) Know that Jim is in my prayers…E.F.

God bless, our family was where you were at last year, the miracle of a heart arrived on labour day last year, as you know the Ottawa H.I. Is simply the very best place, I wish you and your family the very best, organ donation works, and it’s an incredible journey!
