For many, ringing in a New Year means looking forward to the year to come with perhaps a resolution or two to guide us. For those on the waiting list for an organ transplant, this is a luxury. When you are waiting for your miracle, day-to-day is the only option.
We’re tempted to say goodbye to 2014 with a hearty “don’t let the door hit you on your way out” type of send-off. After all, this year we witnessed Jim and his family struggle through so much pain, worry and life-threatening challenges. We saw the organ donation registration go up, but only by a percentage – not the dazzling numbers for which we were hoping. And we know that organ donation continues to be a terrible problem in Ontario and Canada. So many life-saving organs are lost because families are still not talking about their final wishes.
But 2014 also saw us touch the lives of over 55,000 people with our simple words. People from all over the world (211 countries!), voiced their support and shared the message. Maybe 2014 was our foundation for tremendous change in 2015? Let’s hope.
So we will ring in 2015 believing that the best is yet to come. We believe Jim will get the new heart he desperately needs, and we’ll be able to write from the perspective of living, not waiting.
Make 2015 a year to remember. Register to be an organ donor, and talk to your family about it.
