Kicking Puppies

Jim and Marah made the remarkable decision many, many months ago to allow their story to be used as inspiration to improve organ donation registration. To put themselves out there – in the complete and honest way that they do – is beyond brave. We’d hazard a guess that most people wouldn’t consider being this generous when faced with life-threatening issues.

Which is why it is hard to take some of the ignorant commentary that we receive. Why would someone take the time to spread negativity in the face of such inspiration? Do you think these people kick puppies too?

Jim and Marah are walking a tightrope of emotion – ill-informed remarks (mean-spirited or otherwise) are devastating. They are simply not equipped to deal with this kind of behaviour, and nor should they have to be.

Please know that most of the feedback we receive is lovely and supportive, and very much appreciated. But sometimes it only takes one little comment to bring you down.

Jim, Marah – thank you for your generosity; for allowing the world into your unbelievably difficult story. The strength, faith and love that you demonstrate is unparalleled. You are making a difference and it matters. Very much.

Be My Valentine

February 14 brings to mind chocolate, cheesy cards and flowers. Valentine’s Day is a day to celebrate love. In many countries it’s also National Donor Day. What a fantastic concept – bringing together two days to show you care!

On February 14 sign up to be an organ donor.

Show that you don’t believe anyone should have to wait for a life-saving organ transplant; show that you believe in giving the gift of life; show your support for Jim and the too many others waiting; show that you want to spread hope; and show that you care.

Will you?

Share this message as far as you can – celebrate Valentine’s Day by signing up to be an organ donor. We can’t imagine a lovelier gift.

Wait Instead of Celebrate

The ups and downs of the organ donation waiting list are extreme. Jim, Marah and their family have been on this cruel roller-coaster for over two years now.

Jim endured and persevered through a medical intervention of a mechanical assist device designed to keep his heart going just weeks ago. The success of this procedure buoyed hope and allayed some fear. Such is the reality of Jim’s illness though, complications have arisen and Jim ended up in the hospital again.

Waiting for a life-saving heart transplant is hard enough. The urgency that has been re-introduced makes it exponentially more difficult for Jim, for Marah, for their children, family and friends. How do you deal with the wait now?

Because only 25% of us are registered organ donors, Jim waits. Please – do something about it today. Sign up to be an organ donor. Turn the wait to celebrate.

Too Long & Too Wrong

The wait for an organ donation in Ontario and in Canada is too long. The fact that it doesn’t have to be like this quite frankly makes us crazy.

While people like Jim are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant, their own quality of life deteriorates dramatically. Stress, worry and fear take a tremendous toll on family and friends waiting right along side.

Imagine living with a life-threatening situation for over 2 years…..knowing that it is because others seem to be apathetic toward organ donation registration. How does this make you feel? Crazy, right?

It’s well past time to shake this up. Sign up today to be an organ donor. Tell everyone you know about this travesty. Do it today.

Bittersweet Anniversary

On January 10, 2013 Jim and Marah were told that the only option to save Jim’s life was a heart transplant. Two years ago.

The fact that Jim is still here with us, waiting, is a miracle in itself. The fact that he is still waiting, is flat-out wrong.

Everyone understands that two years of waiting like this is torturous and we hear from many people asking how they can help. What’s the answer? Sign up to be a donor. Talk about it – change this reality.

Let this bittersweet anniversary be the impetus for real change, for the 75% of Canadians who haven’t gotten the message.

Let the real celebration be a new heart for Jim – soon. #jimshearts

Didn’t Think of That….

We recently had a small awakening with regard to being on the waitlist for an organ donation for an extended period. Jim, of course, has been waiting for a heart for 2 years now and this looming “anniversary” got us thinking about what that means to people like Jim and Marah.

Jim and Marah are among the wonderful people who you would classify as “givers”. They are the first ones to volunteer a ride, a meal, a helping hand. Their hospitality is unsurpassed…..except that they haven’t been able to provide this for more than 2 years. What does it do to a person to suddenly (and for a long duration) be on the receiving end of the helping hand, the meal, the support?

Don’t get us wrong, Jim and Marah couldn’t be more gracious and certainly have many more pressing challenges due to their long stay on the waitlist. It did occur to us though that this situation has many more trials that chip away at your quality of life, general happiness and energy. We didn’t think of this before, but now that we have it adds to the sense of urgency to eliminate the waitlist.

Bottom line? You need to be a donor. Register today.

Goodbye 2014

For many, ringing in a New Year means looking forward to the year to come with perhaps a resolution or two to guide us. For those on the waiting list for an organ transplant, this is a luxury. When you are waiting for your miracle, day-to-day is the only option.

We’re tempted to say goodbye to 2014 with a hearty “don’t let the door hit you on your way out” type of send-off. After all, this year we witnessed Jim and his family struggle through so much pain, worry and life-threatening challenges. We saw the organ donation registration go up, but only by a percentage – not the dazzling numbers for which we were hoping. And we know that organ donation continues to be a terrible problem in Ontario and Canada. So many life-saving organs are lost because families are still not talking about their final wishes.

But 2014 also saw us touch the lives of over 55,000 people with our simple words. People from all over the world (211 countries!), voiced their support and shared the message. Maybe 2014 was our foundation for tremendous change in 2015? Let’s hope.

So we will ring in 2015 believing that the best is yet to come. We believe Jim will get the new heart he desperately needs, and we’ll be able to write from the perspective of living, not waiting.

Make 2015 a year to remember. Register to be an organ donor, and talk to your family about it.

Christmas Wishes

This Christmas, we find ourselves wishing for a lot. We wish for Jim to receive a new heart, and be returned to good health. We wish for his family to sleep peacefully, without the constant worry that has been plaguing them for two years. We wish for the far too many families waiting for an organ donation to stop their wait.

We wish for you, and all Canadians to sign up to be an organ donor.

This Christmas, give the gift of life. Be an organ donor. It’s the most amazing gift anyone can ever give.

Merry Christmas to all.

‘Tis the Season

Our focus for the past many weeks has been on Jim’s frail health. It’s been on supporting his family through the fear and the uncertainty of major surgeries and their outcomes.

There really should be a “pause button” on the rest of life’s realities while a family struggles through life and death scenarios. But these realities remain, and build, even while we don’t pay them much attention.

If at all possible, we want to step in and shelter Jim and his family from the stress of the every day. There is just no room for Jim’s wife, Marah, to worry about her grocery bill, her hydro bill, or debt that is accumulating. Through our fundraising efforts, we are attempting to alleviate this worry just a bit, and though we are doing very well, we’re not there yet!

In this season of giving, please consider donating to Jim’s Hearts. We cannot think of a better gift than to help a family in need and take just a bit of pressure off their shoulders.

Please – share this message as far and wide as you can this holiday season. All the best to you and your family.

We Believe. Do you?

Lately, we’ve been ending our messages about Jim with the expression “we believe”. Because we do. We believe that Jim will recover from his surgery and be eligible for a heart transplant very soon. We believe that heart will come and Jim will be on the road to good health. We believe that the stress and pain will become memories, and not a daily endurance test.

Mostly, we believe in you. We believe that the people of Canada will turn things around and sign up to become organ donors. Will it take a miracle? We believe in those too. Do you?

Please. Sign up to be an organ donor today.  #beadonor #jimshearts
